Position Statement

Arm End Development

The Aboriginal Heritage Council categorically opposes the proposed Arm End development and construction of a golf course at Gellibrand Point.

The Gellibrand Point Nature Recreation Area is a highly significant Aboriginal cultural landscape within the Country of the Mumirimina people of the Oyster Bay Nation. More than 35 sites are currently recorded within this headland and it remains a major, intact Aboriginal cultural landscape, standing as a remnant amidst widespread destruction of similar sites on Timtumili Minanya / Derwent River.

Gellibrand Point is uniquely registered as an ‘Aboriginal place’ on the Aboriginal Heritage Register, reflecting its profound cultural importance. The Council has consistently and unanimously opposed all permit applications related to this development since being made aware of the project in 2013.  Our advice regarding the cultural significance of the area and the need for its protection, which has been provided by various iterations of this Council to several different Ministers over the past 12 years, has been consistently ignored.

The extensive Aboriginal heritage in the area means any development risks further impacting unrecorded and significant Aboriginal cultural values. The Council remains committed to protecting this irreplaceable cultural place at all costs and urges the Minister and Government to ensure that no further impacts be permitted on Gellibrand Point.
