Ya pulingina, milaythina pakana.- Hello and welcome to Aboriginal land.Aboriginal people have lived on this island,lutruwita, now known as Tasmania,for an unimaginably long time.Archaeology tells us our ancestorslived across the island for at least 35,000 yearsand were the southernmost population on earthfor about 20,000 years.But for us, the Tasmanian Aboriginal community,we believe we've been here forever.Our creation stories, oral histories, cultural practises,and deep knowledge of this place and countryis all something that's been handed downthrough hundreds of generations of our community.As you work through this module,you're gonna learn a bit moreabout Aboriginal cultural heritagein lutruwita Tasmania.Middens, hut depressions, our stone tools,all of these tangible connectionsto our ancestors and our past.Along with that is the intangible heritageand that's all of the knowledge and the storiesand the songs and the dances.The community hold that knowledgeand those things are also connected to place.These places are incredibly importantto the Aboriginal community.They're places of spiritual connection,they're places that hold our history,and we can learn so much about the past from these sites.And so they're incredibly important to protectand we're hoping to share some of that with you today.(gentle music)

  • How can I find out if there is Aboriginal heritage where I live?
  • How can I find out if Aboriginal heritage will be impacted by my renovation, building or other ground disturbance work?
  • What do I do if I think I have found Aboriginal heritage?
  • What are the consequences for me if I damage Aboriginal heritage?

The first section of this module introduces the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and its cultural importance not only for Tasmanian Aboriginal people, but on the world stage.

The second section of this module looks at your legal obligations about Aboriginal heritage in Tasmania.

The third section of this module looks at the role of Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania.

In the next sections of this module, we meet “Rosie and Bob” who will navigate the Aboriginal Heritage Assessment Process and show you how to ensure Aboriginal heritage is considered during planning for works or activities.

Also during this section, you will be introduced to some of the types of Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage and how to identify and report Aboriginal heritage.

The final section of this module is a self-assessment exercise for you to complete.

Learning outcomes

As you work through this module there are a number of knowledge checks. These are an opportunity to practice and apply what you have learnt. How you answer these is not part of the final assessment.

At the completion of this module it is expected that you will be able to:

  • recognise expressions of Aboriginal heritage;
  • know who to contact about the Aboriginal Heritage Assessment Process;
  • know what to do if you find instances of Aboriginal heritage;
  • understand what the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is and why it is important; and
  • understand the legislation and guidelines for protecting and managing Aboriginal heritage in Tasmania
