The Aboriginal Heritage Council met for their regular monthly meeting on Friday 24 February 2023 in Hobart.
This was the first Council meeting for 2023. Council welcomed on board new members Theresa Sainty, Dave mangenner Gough and Lyndon O’Neil. This inaugural 2023 meeting was an opportunity for new and existing members to discuss the role of Council and reiterate its importance in protecting Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage.
Council considered two applications for a permit under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975 and resolved to not oppose either. These permits were required to undertake activities to protect Aboriginal heritage from further deterioration due to human and environmental impacts.
The first permit was to enable land managers and Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania staff to undertake stabilisation work to protect a significant and unique hut depression from environmental damage caused by wind exposure and seal activity. AHT has presented to Council several times about the project, providing updates about reconnaissance trips to the site, and details about the planned techniques and materials to be used to stabilise the hut depression.
The second permit was to implement mitigation strategies to prevent people damaging Aboriginal heritage sites through reckless and illegal four-wheel driving behaviour.
The next meeting of the Aboriginal Heritage Council will be held on Friday 31 March 2023 in Hobart.
