I grew up in the Burnie region and am a member of the Burnie Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation (TAC) and Community. I moved to Woolnorth Station with my two children at the end of 1999 working in various roles as a Jillaroo (stock hand), cook and tour guide. In 2005, I moved to Smithton.
In 2013, I began working at the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation as the Culture and Capability Coordinator which I find to be a very rewarding role.
My interest in Aboriginal heritage issues and cultural practices are very close to my heart and I feel privileged and honoured to have been appointed a member of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Heritage Council. I believe in the important role the Council plays within Tasmania and have faith that Aboriginal heritage and cultural values will continue to be protected with increased education and awareness to the wider community.
Sonya's 3 year appointment as a Council member will end on 13 August 2020.
